About these images:
- VI hints
-
Used extensively throughout the 1990s in teaching students to use vi,
along with the vilearn(1) program. The image shows a cursor on the
second text line of three, with various indicators showing what
commands to type in relation to the cursor position. Students found
the movement keys subimage, in which the j descender hints
at
down , and the k ascender hints at up, particularly
helpful when just starting. The C, s,
and r commands are shown exclusively iconically.
Mnemonics are not included in this image as they were covered in lecture.
- Emacs hints
-
Similar in style to the preceding, the Emacs Hints image focusses on
a cursor on the second line of three, with many basic cursor movement
commands shown in relation to that frame of reference. This image
also includes basic buffer and window splitting commands. The
transposition and C-x h keys could likely be converted to
more iconic representations.
Mnemonics are not included in this image as they were covered in lecture.
- Vim graphical cheat sheet
-
This image is appropriate for Vi users past the just-starting stage, with
a particular nicety of distinctive coloring for command accepting
motion suffixes.
