 - whether the first track is actually empty is a little random

If you can't play a file with a .midi extension by clicking on it, but
.mid usually works, than blame microsoft's brainchild, the 8+3 filename
convention, and the concomitant failure of their adulating followers for
failing to install a handler for the full four-character extension.
