FAIR PARTICIPANTS WIN AWARDS

by Pam North

The 10th annual Gilpin County Fair was a great success this year, and
lots of people went home with prizes for participating in the many
contests and exhibitions presented.

The new Sugar, Spice, Snips and Snails Selebration consisted of three
events. The Fairest of the Fair category (infants to 2 years old) was
won by Levi James (12 months), with Tristan Anderle (17 months) taking
second place, and Riley Lovingier (7 months) taking third place. First
place in The Little Munchkin category (3 to 5 years) was won by Aspen
Cowan (5 years), second place by Lindsay James (3 years), and third
place by Wyatt Lovingier (4 years). The Most Photogenic from both of
those categories was a first place tie between Lindsay James and Tristan
Anderle. Obviously Gilpin County has some adorable children.

The Art Show boasted a variety of entries in a wide range of media.
First place in the oils and acrylics category was won by Theresa Joyce's
"Moonlight on Longs Peak." Bob Unruh's "Aspen Leaves" won in
photography, and Wes Owens' "Sunflowers" was the winning entry in
watercolor. The Fine Crafts category
had a tie for first place between Rebeccah Joyce's "The Seed" and Ed
Saxton's "Inlay Coffee Table and Hardwood Rocking Chair." The
Children/Student class was won by Alyson Price with "Daydreaming
Margaret." Dianne Widom walked away with the Best in Show award for her
"Summer."

The Talent Show was an exciting part of the proceedings, with children
winning many awards. In the Little Kids Division, Shaylyn Johnson won
first place by singing "Five Little Ducks," followed by a second place
tie shared by Tim Johnson who danced, and Wyatt Lovingier who sang "I'm
Proud to be an American." Paige Johnson, Tess Brownson and Erin
Brownson sang and danced their way to the first place award in the Big
Kids Division with their rendition of "He Loves You Not." In the Adults
Division Hallie Makuh took first place with her song "In His Eyes," and
second place was won by Heather Eaton, Sarah Bankovich and Tracy
Yanchunis for their vocal rendition of "I Love Rock and Roll."

The judges for the Cooking Contest had their work cut out for them (what
a fun job). In the Baking Category, first place was won by Nina
Steinman's Cinnamon Rolls; second place by Debbie Krause's Cornish
Pastries, and third place by Nan Harvey's Drunken Crazy Pistachio
Bread. Ana Mueller's Strawberry Coffee Cake took first place in the
Desserts Category, with Judy Coleman's Strawberry Rhubarb Pie following
in second place, and Angie Diamond's Jewish Apple Cake taking third
place. The Canning Category had two first places (Linda Watson's
Tomatoes, and Re Stewart's Lemon Butter), and Linda Watson won two
second places with her Spiced Pear Butter and her Spiced Peach Butter.
Sam Urban
got a third place for his Red Pepper Jelly (it's good for a guy to
cook). The kids proved their mettle in the Juniors Desserts Category
(Renae Miner's Tomato Cake took first place, and Brittany Schmidli's
Chocolate Chip Cookies took second place), and in the Juniors Baking
Category Brittany Schmidli's Lemon Poppy Seed Loaf won first, and
Rebecca Miner's Pumpkin Bread took second.

talented artists, gifted performers, accomplished cooks and outstanding
rodeo riders. But of course.
