Wrote weekly full-length articles and a regular cooking column, along with occasional extra features. 3/92 to 5/03 - Chief Appraiser with Gilpin County Assessor's Office (Central City, Colorado). Responsible for all phases and aspects of appraisal process; valuation of residential and commercial property and vacant land; sales analysis and setting of values for tax roll; defense of values in taxpayer protest hearings (Board of Equalization, Board of Assessment Appeals and District Court); taxpayer interaction and communication. 8/90 to 3/92 - Came to Colorado and worked in real estate, insurance, and retail sales fields until a position opened in tax appraisal. 2/90 to 8/90 - Employed with Travis County Public Improvements and Transportation Department, Right-of-Way Section (Austin, Texas) as a review appraiser for a 6-month bond project. Responsibilities included reviewing appraisals submitted in the process of right-of-way condemnation; communicating with appraisers when their reports were erroneous or lacking in required content, and assisting them in the correction and completion of their appraisals; recommending final acquisition values to the county commissioners. 12/88 to 2/90 - Over one year with the Travis County Tax Office (Austin, Texas) as a tax analyst involved with the property tax collection process. Responsibilities included interaction and communication with taxpayers in resolving tax debts; keeping detailed records of payment agreements, and following up to make certain that contracts were fulfilled. Developed diplomatic and respectful ways of dealing with people in the process, so that county's objective of collecting delinquent taxes was attained, and taxpayers were satisfied with the manner in which they were treated. 3/83 to 10/86 - Over 3 1/2 years with the Williamson County Appraisal District (Georgetown, Texas) as an appraiser, with residential appraisal as my main area of involvement, and some additional experience in vacant land, commercial and personal property. Also defended values in county taxpayer protest hearings when required. 11/78 to 4/83 - Over 4 1/2 years with the City of Austin Tax Department (Austin, Texas) as a clerk, with my primary area of responsibility being the calculation of real property square footages and values. I have had additional experience over the years in administrative assistance, management, customer relations, light bookkeeping, record-keeping, retail sales, journalism, publicity, merchandising, and advertising. I have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. I have familiarity and experience with computers, and am proficient in several programs, such as WordPerfect and Excel. ADDITIONAL I have been actively involved in wildlife rehabilitation for 25 years, caring for orphaned and injured wildlife with the goal of eventual release back to the wild. I founded a nucleus group, Wildlife Rescue, Inc., in Austin, Texas in 1977, and served as its first president. I assisted in its growth during which its membership increased to approximately 150 members, aiding between 3,000 and 3,500 mammals and birds annually; the group is still in existence today. In the process of forming this group I acquired good organizational abilities, and added to my verbal and written communication skills by writing press releases and educational material, and giving lectures and classes to civic groups, schools, city and county recreation departments. I served for ten years on the Gilpin County Planning Commission, working with many key areas of concern, such as zoning and growth issues, developing the county's Master Plan, subdivision regulations, and various county codes. My main reason for being involved in this commission was to be of service to the community.
