Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;

I Who rides so late through night and wind?
It is the father with his child.
He has the boy sure in arm,
He grips him surely, he holds him warm.

"Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?"-
"Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht?
Den Erlenkönig mit Kron' und Schweif?"-
"Mein Sohn, es ist ein Nebelstreif."-

II "My son, why hidest thou so anxious thy face?"--
"Seeëst, father, thou the Elvenking not?
The Elvenking with crown and train?"--
"My son, it is a strip of fog."--

"Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir!
Gar schöne Spiele spiel' ich mit dir;
Manch' bunte Blumen sind an dem Strand;
Meine Mutter hat manch' gülden Gewand."-

III "Thou dear child, come, go with me!
Quite lovely games I [will] play with thee;
Many colored flowers are on the shore;
My mother has many golden clothes."--

"Mein Vater, mein Vater, und hörest du nicht,
Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht?"-
"Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind!
In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind."-

IV "My father, my father, and hearest thou not,
What [the] Elvenking me softly promises?"--
"Be quiet, stay quiet, my child!
In dry leaves rustles the wind."--

"Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir gehn?
Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;

V "Willst thou, fine knave, with me go?
My daughters shall thee await prettily...;
My daughters lead the nightly dance
And rock and dance and sing thee [to sleep]."--

"Mein Vater, mein Vater, und siehst du nicht dort
Erlkönigs Töchter am düstern Ort?"-
"Mein Sohn, mein Sohn, ich seh' es genau;
Es scheinen die alten Weiden so grau."-

VI "My father, my father, and seeëst thou not there
Elvenking's daughter on the gloomy place?"--
"My son, my son, I see it surely;
[There] gleam the old willows so grey ."--

"Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt;

VII "I love thee, [I'm drawn by] thy beauteous form;
And beëst thou not willing, so need I force."--
"My father, my father, now [he seizes me ...]!
[The] Elvenking has to me a sorrow done!"--

Dem Vater grauset's, er reitet geschwind,
Er hält in Armen das ächzende Kind,
Erreicht den Hof mit Mühe und Not;
In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.
VIII The father greys, he rides fleetingly,
He holds in arms the gasping child,
Reaches his farm with effort and dread;
In his arms the child was dead.
